RATIONING OF JET FUEL AFFECTS DOMESTIC FLIGHTS


Air Niugini regrets to inform our valued customers that jet fuel rationing by Puma Energy in Port Moresby continues to cause disruptions to our domestic flights. Unfortunately, this rationing of aviation fuel has now been extended to other airports such as Lae and Mt Hagen, whilst supply at certain other airports has ceased altogether. This has resulted in Air Niugini reducing further its current domestic schedule, causing flight disruptions and inconvenience for our customers.

Air Niugini wishes to advise the traveling public that our flights to and from Rabaul have been further downgraded from Q400 aircraft to Dash 8 due to the continuous runway repair works at Tokua airport, Rabaul.The National Airports Corporation (NAC) has reduced the operating runway length to allow for critical repairs. Air Niugini’s Boeing 767 aircraft have now resumed operations on the airline’s Brisbane and Singapore flights following the completion of scheduled heavy maintenance checks. Over the past six months both our 767 aircraft underwent scheduled C-check maintenance, starting with P2-PXV which returned to service in January, and followed by P2-PXW which returned to service on 20th April. The maintenance included a complete refurbishment of the passenger cabins and lavatories.

AIR NIUGINI SUSPENDS TUFI FLIGHTS


Air Niugini has suspended all flights to Tufi airport, Oro Province following a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by PNG Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA), closing the airport to aircraft which have more than 20 seats. The suspension comes into effect this morning, Friday 03rd February and will continue until further notice. Air Niugini has been operating twice weekly to Tufi, every Monday and Friday. Air Niugini will commence weekly services connecting Australia, Papua New Guinea and Palau effective 28th February 2023. Air Niugini, in partnership with the Australian government will service this route under the Australian government’s Pacific Flight Programme which underwrites flights during the initial establishment phase. The programme has supported over 450 flights in the Pacific since December 2020 and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic across 14 routes and 11 countries. This has helped keep Pacific communities connected, maintain supply chains and deliver critical medicines. The programme removes airlines’ commercial risk operating an agreed flight, assuring regular and scheduled flights for passengers and cargo.

International Travel: Vaccination Requirements – Flights Departing PNG


All passengers departing internationally from PNG are reminded that they must show evidence at check-in that they are fully vaccinated. For passengers who have been vaccinated in PNG, they must produce the yellow International Vaccination Certificate (which is issued by PNG National Department of Health).  The green domestic vaccination certificate is not sufficient.  For passengers who were vaccinated overseas this will be the vaccination certificate issued in the country they were vaccinated in. The only exceptions are where; the passenger can provide evidence of a medical exemption in a form acceptable to their destination  country,  and for any countries of transit. This will normally be signed by a medical practitioner; or children under the age of 18 (which is presently the minimum age for vaccinations in PNG) and the child is approved to travel to their destination (and for any countries of transit) unvaccinated .

Air Niugini is pleased to advise customers that due to high demand for Sydney flights, the airline will be operating three special flights from Port Moresby to Sydney and back, using the Boeing 767 aircraft.The flights, PX 4001/4002 will operate every Sunday, commencing on 28th November, followed by 05th and 12th December. Air Niugini CEO, Mr. Bruce Alabaster announced today(Tuesday 28th September, 2021) that the airline will operate four special Boeing 767 widebody jet flights from Cairns to Port Moresby between now and Christmas.Flight PX 093 will operate on Wednesday’s 06th October, 03rd and 24th November, and on 22nd December 2021. These flights are mainly scheduled to carry freight for exporters in Far North Queensland up to Asia.   This will include fresh produce and fish from Cairns onto both Hong Kong and Singapore, but are also available for passenger booking from Cairns to Port Moresby.

Air Niugini will recommence flights to and from Hoskins airport, West New Britain from tomorrow until Monday 11th January. Flights between January 5th and 11th are for passengers already holding tickets. There are no restrictions on passengers travelling into Hoskins during this period. Per advice from the National Control Centre, passengers departing Hoskins will be required to undertake a rapid COVID test at the airport prior to the flight.  This takes 20-25 minutes for the result, so passengers are requested to arrive early.

Air Niugini would like to inform the travelling public that the runway length at Tokua Airport, Rabaul has been temporarily shortened by the National Airports Corporation (NAC) to allow for urgent runway maintenance works. These runway works are expected to last approximately two months, depending on weather conditions. As a result of the above, all Air Niugini flights to and from Tokua are rescheduled onto smaller Dash-8 aircraft, operated by our subsidiary company Link PNG. The shortening of the runway means that payloads are heavily restricted, even for Dash-8 aircraft, and as far as possible the number of services into Tokua each day has been increased in order to partially address this reduction in available capacity.

Air Niugini will be operating a charter flight on 09th December between Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Fiji to repatriate citizens back home to their respective countries in time for Christmas. The charter flight, PX 9084 will be operated by Air Niugini’s Boeing 737- 700 series aircraft, departing Port Moresby at 6am for Honiara, Solomon Islands. It arrives in Honiara at 09:20am before departing for Fiji at 10am. The flight from Honiara to Nadi will take 3hours, arriving at 2pm(local time). The return service, PX 9085 departs Nadi airport at 3pm and arrives in Port Moresby at 7pm via Honiara.

Air Niugini announced the safe return of one of its aircraft following an engine shutdown during a flight this morning, from Port Moresby to Goroka. This morning, a De Havilland Dash 8-300 aircraft, operating flight PX160 from Port Moresby to Goroka, experienced a technical issue with the Left-Hand engine, having just departed Jacksons Airport, Port Moresby. From 1am  25th April, all pre-departure testing will cease at the airport for all flights .  All passengers should proceed directly to the Departures Check in through the Main Terminal Entrance. If travelling to Singapore, Hong Kong or Manila, or transiting to a country that requires a negative certificate you must bring the certificate to the airport with you. The certificate must be issued by a Doctor and include at least the following information: the date and time of the test;the name of the individual tested, as stated in the passport; at least one other personal identifier such as date of birth or passport number; the type of test conducted; the brand and make of the test; that the specimen for the test as collected, and the test was carried out, by or under the supervision of a Doctor; the result of the test (such as ‘negative’ or ‘not detected’); the signature of the Doctor providing the certificate, as well as their Authority to Practise Number.

Passengers flying to Australia: Air Niugini is pleased to advise that effective 1am on 18th April, previous requirements for Covid-19 testing requirements prior to travel will cease.  Passengers will not need to get a test prior to departure to Australia,  and hence can proceed directly to the Departures Check in through the Main Terminal Entrance. Passengers flying into Singapore and Manila: Both Singapore and the Philippines are now open for travel to non-citizens.  You must complete either a negative rapid test (or a negative PCR test) prior to scheduled departure. Air Niugini would like to advise customers of the amended COVID19 test requirements prior to travel to the Philippines and also to United Kingdom(UK) via Singapore. All passengers flying to Manila: Philippines is now open for travel to non-citizens.  Effective from 1st April, for passengers flying into the Philippines as their final destination, a rapid antigen test (RAT) administered and certified by a Doctor is accepted in lieu of a PCR test.  You may either complete a negative RAT test at the airport, or you can bring a negative compliant RAT test certificate with you. The RAT test needs to be completed within 24 hours of departure. All passengers transiting via Singapore to the UK:  Passengers are no longer required to undertake pre-departure testing and can progress directly to the Departures Check in through the Main Terminal Entrance. Twelve Air Niugini Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (LAMEs) have received their certificates last week after successfully completing their B1/B2 Q400 Type rating course for the first time via virtual learning or Distance Learning Training method. The five weeks training by an organisation in Canada was conducted through live streaming with full participation from the LAMEs at ANG training centre at 7mile here in Port Moresby. Air Niugini’s Executive Manager, Training Maika Bovoro said prior to COVID19, the only Civil Aviation Safety Authority(CASA) approved delivery training method was done in a classroom setting with an instructor physically present, adding that the current virtual learning allows for flexibility, no commuting and significant cost savings.

Air Niugini has partnered with International SOS to deliver PCR testing at Jacksons Airport for all passengers departing on Air Niugini flights.  With International SOS having operated in Papua New Guinea for over 28 years and employing more than 400 Papua New Guinean health workers,  Air Niugini believes they are well placed to support the delivery of this testing program. PCR testing of all international passengers departing from Port Moresby commenced on the 17th May, following its upgrade from the prior Rapid Antigen testing. Now that we have two weeks of evidence of effective implementation Air Niugini advises this test at time of check-in is considered to meet the requirement to have a COVID test within 72 hours of international travel.

AIR NIUGINI’S FIRST NATIONAL RETIRING PILOT CAPTAIN PAUL KODOR LEAVES BEHIND LEGACY


Papua New Guinean pilot Captain Paul Kodor had retired in February this year after flying with Air Niugini for 34 years, leaving behind a great legacy including training a large number of pilots including many of the PNG nationals who are now flying the airline’s Boeing aircraft. He is Air Niugini’s first national pilot to have retired upon reaching the age of 65, following his final flight, PX004 on the Boeing 767 from Brisbane to Port Moresby on February 2, the day he turned 65 years old. 65 years is the maximum age approved by ICAO for pilots on international flights. His greatest achievement was becoming a Check and Training pilot on the Boeing aircraft following Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) PNG’s approval in 2004. Over the years, Captain Kodor conducted at least seven type rating courses which involved 14 pilots, mostly First Officers (FOs) trained under his wings, many of whom are currently flying Air Niugini’s Boeing aircraft.

The twenty four children from remote Bundi, Madang have now arrived home and settled in at Mondia bridge Transit House at the foot of Mt Wilhelm, Chimbu after a memorable, inspiring day at Goroka airport yesterday with Air Niugini pilots and cabin crew. The children, mostly orphans between the age of six and 11 had not only fulfil their dream of seeing an Air Niugini aircraft for the first time, they had the opportunity to also board the plane and meet Air Niugini pilots, Captain Nama Mariole and First Officer (FO) Patrick Kiromat. Air Niugini’s most senior Boeing Captain and the longest serving pilot Captain Paun Nonggorr and his son, Captain Jason Nonggorr have made history by becoming the first Papua New Guinean father and son Captains flying for the national flag carrier. Although they are not on the same aircraft type, their achievement as Papua New Guinean father and son Captains is the first for Air Niugini, if not Papua New Guinea. The senior Nonggorr is Captain on the Boeing 767 jet and his son Jason is Captain on the Fokker 100 jet aircraft. From the Koepka Ramdi Tribe of Koepka, Mount Hagen, Western Highlands, Captain Paun Nonggorr was also the youngest national to have attained Captain on Fokker F28 jet aircraft at the age of 26 in 1983. He has been with Air Niugini for 44 years, 35 of these years, since 1985, flying Air Niugini's wide body Boeing 767, Airbus 310 and Airbus 300 aircraft on International routes.

Link PNG, a subsidiary of Air Niugini will launch its first commercial passenger flights to Komo airport in Hela province effective, Tuesday 19th of November 2019. The National Airports Corporation has advised that the runway maintenance will commence effective on Friday 22nd February with the initial works commencing on the night of 21st February and will continue until the 02nd April, subject to weather conditions. During this period all services to Rabaul will be operated by Dash 8 , the aircraft type that’s operated by Air Niugini’s sister company Link PNG.

Two Air Niugini pilots have made history when they operated their  first commercial flight together as father and son last Friday, 01st February 2019.It was a proud moment for First Officer (FO), Christian Yates Round and Captain Mark Yates Round when the father – son duo proudly operated PX 208 on a Fokker 70 aircraft from Port Moresby to Lae, then Hoskins, Rabaul and back to Port Moresby.
