Tabubil

Tabubil lies in the Star Mountains in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea. Predominantly, the township was founded to provide infrastructure to the OK Tedi mine (known for gold and copper mining) located thirty kilometres northwest. Tabubil is situated in rugged jungle terrain and is known as the “umbrella town” for its persistent rainy weather. The dense rainforest is home to a myriad of indigenous fauna such as tree kangaroos, possums, bats, birds and stunning flora such as exotic orchids. The famed Fly River winds from Tabubil down to the south coast.

Things to see and do

Tabubil attracts a unique range of exotic bird species due to its elevated location. Kiunga Nature Tours, which has been offering birdwatching tours since the 1990s, has a Tabubil Bird Area Tour for those keen to get out and discover the amazing birds in the region. Kiunga Nature Tours also offers adventure tours via Nature Expedition Adventures. Trek through dense rainforest, explore the Fly River by banana boat, explore local villages, and much more. For fishing enthusiasts, book a fishing tour on the Fly River and try your hand at catching the famed Papuan black bass. Supporting an ex-pat community, Tabubil has a golf course, which is located near the airport, and recreational facilities such as swimming pools, a gym, a soccer field and basketball court. Most facilities are membership based. The township also has a hotel for accommodation and eating out.
