Mendi

Mendi is located in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Nestled in the Mendi River Valley, the small township sits at an elevation of 1,675 metres. To the east of the valley stands the second highest peak in Papua New Guinea, Mount Giluwe. Mendi offers the perfect base for intrepid travellers to explore Lake Kutubu or the Tari Basin.

Things to see and do

Kiburu Lodge in Mendi offers everything from bushwalking to birdwatching to trout fishing to white water rafting. Travel from Mendi to Lake Kutubu. The lake district is reputed to be incredibly striking and offers its very own cultural diversity. Make sure you pack your bathers for a swim in the lake. Alternatively, you can paddle around the lake in a canoe to explore how the locals live. The Tari Basin is home to the Huli people and famous for its Huli Wigmen. The Huli Wigmen can be seen performing at festivals in Papua New Guinea and are renowned for their ornate headdresses made predominantly from real hair. You can spend some time with the flamboyant Huli people on a cultural tour. The region is also renowned for its amazing birdlife, so if you enjoy birdwatching then don’t miss this opportunity.
