Alotau

Alotau is a picturesque township located in the Milne Bay Province, which offers visitors the perfect place to relax and unwind. It’s also a great base to explore the rest of the region from. Historically speaking, Milne Bay is renowned for the battle that ensued between the Japanese and Allied Forces in 1942, which famously lead to the Japanese army’s first defeat on land.

Things to see and do

The Australian Memorial, located at the foreshore of Alotau, commemorates the Battle of Milne Bay and provides a detailed account of the event. Take your time to walk around the harbour as it offers some beautiful sights emblematic of life in Alotau. Known as the gateway to the Milne Bay Province, Alotau provides access to some of the most amazing coral reefs in Papua New Guinea. For a memorable diving experience, the Tawali Leisure and Dive Resort offers fantastic diving adventures at some of the most exotic reefs in the region. The region also offers some great treks. The trek from Weddau to Alotau, which takes around four days, is well worth the effort, as is the trek to Mount Pasipasi. Take some time to travel to the D’Entrecasteaux Islands, which was named after the French navigator Antoine D’Entrecasteaux who came in search of a fellow countryman. The three main islands – Goodenough, Fergusson and Normanby – all boast their own unique attractions. The Trobriand Islands, north of the D’Entrecasteaux Islands and also known as the ‘Islands of Love’, is the quintessential example of remote island life. If you’re in Alotau around November, make sure you catch the Canoe and Kundu Festival to see warriors dressed in traditional costume racing canoes. The event is a wonderful homage to the region’s rich and beguiling culture. © John Batman Group
